The tourist industry is of major importance for the economy in the district of Dahme-Spreewald. Some 750,000 visitors flock to the region south-east of Berlin each year. As a result, a wide range of hotels and guesthouses has sprung up to cater to the increasing numbers of visitors and overnight stays. Meanwhile there are 130 accommodation establishments registered in the area, offering a total capacity of 7,200 beds. This positive trend in the number of visits is also reflected in rising turnover figures. Currently, the tourist industry is employing about 3,000 people in the district.

A landscape with a unique magic spell
The entire district is dotted with lakes and criss-crossed by rivers and canals. The dense network of waterways is skirted by countryside of exceptional natural beauty, some of which is unique in the world. A greater variety of animals and plants have survived in this area than in any other part of Central Europe. Starting right on the southern border of Berlin, the Dahme Lakes occupy a large part of the north of the district – it is an area of more than 70 lakes, interconnected by a network of rivers, streams and canals, and an ideal haunt for lovers of water sports, hikers and cyclists. The Spree Forest, situated in the south of the district, is a landscape with a character that is unequalled in Europe. It is a cultivated river system comprising a 970-km-long network of streams and rivers, which attracts countless visitors each year. Boat or punt trips around this labyrinth of waterways can be booked from various points of departure.
