The "Spreewald" brand

The southern parts of the district mainly produce gherkins, horseradish and asparagus. That is why this region benefits especially from the "Spreewald" brand, which is owned and marketed by the Spreewald Society. It is an internationally protected umbrella brand, under which fruit and vegetables, meat and fish products, as well as pastry and dairy products are marketed world-wide.

The Spreewald gherkin & friends

The Spreewald gherkin is a real classic and a household name in the whole of Germany. The gherkins are produced and marketed by companies such as Spreewaldkonserve Golßen GmbH. The latter company's fruit and vegetable products also enjoy a high reputation nationally and internationally. Other local products of national and international renown are the quality eggs produced by companies such as Landkost-Ei EZG GmbH and "Wiesenhof Geflügelprodukte", a subsidiary of the Lohmann Group which is based in Niederlehme.

Multifaceted agribusiness

The range of agricultural businesses operating in the region is wide and varied. Large-size factory farms are just as typical as are family businesses and part-time farmers. The Märkische Agrargenossenschaft is a farming co-operative which has meanwhile grown into the region's largest potato producer, running its own potato warehouse and distribution centre. The Dubrower Agrargesellschaft specialises in dairy products, cereals and turf; the company also fattens several thousand geese each year and markets them direct before Christmas.

Organic farming

Many farmers have made a strong commitment to organic farming. On an area of 22,700 ha, which represents some 30% of all the farmland in the district, they are producing food following certified methods of sustainable agriculture. New market segments are being opened up through regional innovations such as ostrich farms with EU-certified abattoirs.
