Aerospace

The Berlin-Brandenburg region is set to become Germany's third aerospace technology centre. Its special expertise is in the areas of jet engine development and production, light aircraft construction, component and system manufacturing, as well as service and maintenance. Including airport staff, there are approximately 16,000 people employed in the region's aerospace industry. The numerous companies and institutions which are based in the Dahme-Spreewald District are making an important contribution to this vital growth industry in the "capital region".

Charting a course for success
The industry's flagship will be Berlin Brandenburg International (BBI) Airport, located at Schönefeld, where numerous airlines and technical maintenance companies will set up business, e.g. Lufthansa Bombardier Aviation Services GmbH and Lufthansa Technik GmbH, to Name but a few. Rolls Royce's and MTU's jet engine development operations will be complemented and supported by an innovative Centre for Engineering and Testing, run by AneCom AeroTest and specialising in gas turbine compressors. Smaller but nonetheless attractive market segments, such as the construction and operation of zeppelins, are currently being explored by SkyCruise Germany and Delcon GmbH.
A landmark-The Aerospace Technology Centre
| The Aerospace Technology Centre, which opened in Wildau in late 2003, is the Economic Development Agency's own contribution to the industry's growth potential. An innovative mix of enterprises are operating from this 8,000-square-metre estate owned by the Economic Development Agency (WFG). Additionally, the Centre also hosts frequent conferences, seminars and other projects related to the industry. |
Locally available training opportunities
|
The district's educational institutions include the University of Applied Sciences Wildau, which offers aviation-related degree courses in a number of economic and technical subjects, as well as the Lufthansa subsidiary TRAINICO and the Germania Airline Training Centre, which offer training schemes for continuing professional development.
More advantages through a pooling of interests
The regional aviation industry has pooled its interests in the Berlin Brandenburg Aerospace Alliance (BBAA) in order to further develop the location in all its relevant aspects. One special contribution to the international marketing of the region is the bi-annual International Aerospace Exhibition (ILA) held in Schönefeld.
